Larry V. Hawthorne, age 67, of Mineral City, died Thursday, September 6, 2018 following a brief illness.
Known as “Papa Larry” to his family, he was born in Union Hospital at Dover on July 28, 1951; a day, years later, he would be proud to share with his grandson, Alex. Larry was one of 13 children born to the late Ralph and Oda Snyder Hawthorne and a 1969 graduate of Tusky Valley High School.
Larry began his career working in the factories as a Journeyman Millwright and Journeyman Machinist before enlisting into the United States Air Force. He proudly served his country in Vietnam as a jet mechanic and specifically worked on the F-4 Phantom Fighter Jets. Upon his return from the service, Larry married the former Debra Scott on September 8, 1972.
Larry continued his career in the machinist industry with the Trumpf Group. He became an expert regarding their CNC Punch Presses and eventually went out on his own forming First Class Technical Services of Dover. Larry became the go-to person in the industry and traveled throughout the United States and Canada, servicing, performing preventative maintenance, and installing machines. He had a natural talent to be able to fix, build and repair just about anything that included plumbing, electrical, and woodworking.
He was a lover of animals and often in his travels would pickup and bring home stray pets. He and Debbie cared for these pets and loved having them as part of their family. Larry’s generous and giving heart gave to not only animals but any one in need; often sacrificing his own needs above others. He recently saw a need to make a difference in the government and made a self-funded run for State Representative this past May.
When not helping others or working, Larry enjoyed hiking, backpacking, and spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed marathon running and instilled in his family the importance of determination and never giving up on a goal or dream.
In addition to his wife of 46 years, Larry will be missed by his son, Zachary (Pamela) Hawthorne of Mineral City and his daughter, April (Scott) Bonvechio of Dover; his grandchildren, Allie, Alex, and Anna Bonvechio as well as numerous siblings, nieces and nephews.
Cremation care will be conducted by Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to The George Fund, c/o Valley View Animal Hospital, 2167 Progress St, Dover, Ohio 44622, a fund that helps local animals in need of veterinary care or to Vietnam Veteran’s of America Chapter #857, PO BOX 170, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
