Larry D. Staten, age 73, of New Philadelphia, passed away on December 31, 2011 in Union Hospital at Dover, Ohio following a courageous battle with lung cancer. Larry was born on May 14, 1938 at Oak Hill, Ohio to the late William and Gladys (Rainer) Staten.Larry was famous for his gardening in the Shel-Mar community where he resided for the past 16 years. He was known for his great tomatoes and peppers. He became a Mr. fix-it in the neighborhood because he enjoyed helping and talking to all the neighbors. Larry was also an avid deer and turkey hunter, belonging to the Bolivar Sportsman’s Club for many years. Larry also enjoyed watching sports especially the Cleveland Indians and the Browns.On April 9, 1960, Larry was united in marriage to Betty “Ann” (Oliver) Staten. Other survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Toni and John Campbell; his one and only grandson, Jonathan Campbell, who he loved more than life itself; four sisters, Rosemary (John) Quick of Conneautville, Pennsylvania, Sharon (Gilbert) Rodriguez, Cheryl (Don) Bolen and Kay Maynard of Jackson, Ohio; and many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends and neighbors. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Steve of Oak Hill; sisters, Shirley Carpenter of Oak Hill and Joan Swan of Jackson; and an infant daughter, Terri Ann.Calling hours will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 from 4 to 7 p.m. A service celebrating Larry’s life will be held in the funeral home’s chapel on Thursday beginning at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Max Canfield officiating. Following the funeral service, friends are invited to the First Church of the Brethren, 700 Fair Avenue NW, New Phila., Ohio. 44663, where a meal will be shared.In keeping with Larry’s wishes, cremation will follow the service and his inurnment will be held at a later date in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia.A special thank you goes out to Community Hospice for all the help and wonderful care they have provided and also to Dr. Nagajothi and the staff at Tri-County Hematology and Oncology.
