Larry Gene “Butch” Yakley, 62, of 2490 Ragersville Rd. SW., Ragersville died July 2, 2003 at Aultman Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Dover on February 28, 1941 to the late W. Weldon and Helen Rippl Yakley, Butch graduated from Garaway High School in 1959 and was an Air Force Veteran having served during the Vietnam War. He was a quality control supervisor for Belden Brick in Sugarcreek for the last 35 years, a member of Ragersville Zion United Church of Christ, Ragersville Historical Society, President of Ragersville Community Council and past Commander and Chaplain of the Homer Weiss American Legion Post #494 in Sugarcreek. An avid Cleveland Indians fan, Butch was also the scorekeeper for the boys basketball team and timekeeper for the football team at Garaway High School.
Butch is survived by his wife of 32 years Janie Cook Yakley; daughter Kimberly (Paul) Miller of Millersburg; son Oliver R. Yakley of the home; granddaughter Rosanna Marie Miller; sisters, Marlene (Dean) Gerber of Sugarcreek and Carrie (Keith) Clipson of Vermilion; brothers, Gerald (Beverly) Yakley of Sugarcreek and Joel (Patty) Yakley of Ragersville; nine nephews and one niece; five great-nephews and seven great-nieces; one step-niece and one step-nephew; and step-mother, Bernice Burky Yakley of Sugarcreek.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday July 5, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the Ragersville Zion United Church of Christ with Rev. Edward Morrison and Rev. Welton Stein officiating. Interment will be at Ragersville Cemetery where Homer Weiss American Legion Post #494 will conduct military graveside services. Friends may call at the church on Friday July 4, 2003 from 5 to 8 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Garaway Boosters Club to benefit the boys baseball and basketball teams. (Smith-Geib Sugarcreek 330-852-2141)
