Larry Eugene Arnold

Larry Eugene Arnold, 74, of New Philadelphia, died Monday, December 10, 2012 at Union Hospital in Dover following a brief illness.

A son of the late Marie Helen (Arnold) Strange, Larry was born January 30, 1938 at Piedmont, Ohio. Larry was also preceded in death by his grandmother, Lula Arnold who raised him during his childhood.

Larry graduated from Freeport High School in 1957. Following graduation he began work as a general laborer for the Ohio Department of Transportation. He would be promoted to various positions during his career and eventually retired as a construction supervisor on March 31, 1997. He was well respected among his peers at ODOT and will be remembered for his desire to abide by codes and laws even if the contractors didn’t agree.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at New Philadelphia and was an active member of his community. Larry was a member of the Knights of Columbus at Newcomerstown where he was a 4th degree Knight and at New Philadelphia where he was a 2nd degree Knight. In 1981, He was named the Knight of the Year at Newcomerstown and he also coordinated their annual free throw contest.

Larry was a life member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1555 at Newcomerstown, a member of PERIS and the Tuscarawas Little Stamp Club. He served as a coach for the former BPM team of the Newcomerstown Little League and was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns, Notre Dame Fighting Irish and NASCAR.

He will be remembered most for his personality. Even though he had a deep voice and may have seemed “gruff” at times, Larry was a warm, caring and generous individual who had an extremely soft heart.

Surviving is his loving wife, Carolyn (Reaves) Arnold whom he married on June 7, 1959; a sister, Sharlene (Paul) Rawn of North Fort Myers, Florida; a brother, Jim (companion, Ethel Maxwell) Strange of Harrisville, Pennsylvania and his nieces and nephews, Michelle (Mark) Rawn of Louisville, Kentucky, Brad (Teri) Rawn of Lebanon, Ohio, Jeff (Juanita) Strange, Steve (Kay) Strange and Amy Strange all of Harrisville, Pennsylvania.

Larry was preceded in death by his mother and grandmother, his dear son, Larry Kevin Arnold who passed away on April 8, 2009 and a sister, Norma Jean Smith.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia with a Christian Wake service being held at 5:45 p.m. At the conclusion of the Wake Service, Rev. Harry Milligan will share a song as requested by Larry. Then at 8 p.m. a Lodge of Sorrow service will be conducted by B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1555. Father Jeff Coning will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, December 14, 2012 at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church at New Philadelphia. Burial will follow in Greenmont Union Cemetery at Freeport. Following the committal service, a luncheon will be held in St. Ambrose Hall at the church.
