Kenneth W. Abbuhl, age 76, a longtime resident and civic leader in the Village of Tuscarawas, passed away Friday evening, September 25, 2009, in Hennis Care Center at Dover. Born at Uhrichsville, June 12, 1933, he was a son of the late Roy E. and Matilda Stubbins Abbuhl. After graduating from Uhrichsville High School, in 1952, he entered the United States Air Force, serving honorably in Korea before his discharge in 1956. Ken returned home and went to work for Joy Manufacturing while attending classes at Kent State University. His career at Joy would span 42 years, and at the time of his retirement in 1998 served as a sales engineer. He will be remembered as a man who devoted his life to helping other people. One of his greatest pleasures was lending a hand to a family member, friend, or even someone he barely knew. A faithful member and leader of Sharon Moravian Church for fifty-two years, Ken enjoyed playing dart baseball and building the Moravian Christmas Putz.Ken valued education and spent nearly 40 years serving on the school boards of Indian Valley Schools, the Tuscarawas County and Tuscarawas-Carroll-Harrison Educational Service Center. He leaves behind many fond memories of family vacations on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. On September 11, 1954, Ken married the former Marie Campbell, who survives. Together they observed 55 years of marriage, during which time they reared a family that includes a daughter; Sharon (husband Michael) Herchik of Uniontown, O., as well as two sons; David (wife Mary) Abbuhl of Orange Village, O., and Randall (wife, Maria Pueyo) Abbuhl of Hightstown, New Jersey. Five grandchildren; Rachel Peterson, Laura and Jordan Vesco, Alicia and Rebecca Abbuhl, a great-granddaughter Sienna Peterson, two step-grandchildren; Taylor and Andrea Herchik, and a step-great-granddaughter; Isabella Dutton, also survive. Five brothers; Harold, Doyle, Loren, Richard and David Abbuhl, as well as a sister; Barbara Wengard, two sisters-in-law; Carrie and Lottie Abbuhl, a brother-in-law; John (wife, Marie) Campbell, complete the family. In addition to his parents, Ken is preceded in death by his brothers; Donald and Dale Abbuhl. Friends are invited to call Sunday afternoon from 1 â?? 4 in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at 116 Second Street NE New Philadelphia, and again on Monday from 10 AM â?? Noon in Sharon Moravian Church 4776 Moravian Church Road SE, New Philadelphia. The Revs. Margaret Leinbach and Darrell Johnson will lead Mr. Abbuhl’s funeral Monday at Noon in the Sharon Moravian Church at Tuscarawas. Burial will follow in Sharon Church Cemetery. A luncheon will be served in the church Fellowship Hall following the committal service.
