Kay C. Patrick, age 75, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully late Saturday evening, July 19, 2008, in Union Hospital, following a brief illness. Born at Toledo, Ohio, on December 16, 1932, to the late William and Gladys McLaughlin.Kay was raised in Toledo, and graduated from DeVilbiss High School. As a teen, Kay played field hockey, and was an accomplished equestrian, competing in horseshows throughout the Midwest and South. She attended Sweet Briar College at Sweet Briar, Virginia, for two years before transferring to The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Kay graduated from the School of Education in 1954. It was at this time she met the love of her life, James Patrick, a young law student attending Michigan Law School. Upon graduation, Kay returned to Toledo to teach third grade at Maumee Valley Country Day School. But her heart was with Jim, and after several years of a long-distance courtship, they became engaged, and married on December 12, 1959.With Jim’s roots and legal career in Tuscarawas County, Kay moved to New Philadelphia, where they very soon began a family, and ultimately reared four children. Kay was a member of First Presbyterian Church in New Philadelphia, a long-time member of Union Country Club, the University of Michigan Alumni Association, and Pi Beta Phi Sorority.Kay had a tremendous passion for sports, both as an active participant and spectator. She became a serious tennis player in the early ’70s, and competed in many local tournaments. She continued playing until recent years, and earned the respect of many younger tennis players in the community. Her love for the University of Michigan football team was legendary, and well known to her friends, many of whom supported that “other” team, Ohio State. Kay was involved in all of her children’s, and grandchildren’s, activities. Her interests included caring for her corgis, gardening, reading, and attending theatre and art events. In addition to her parents, Kay was preceded in death by her loving husband, James Shaweker Patrick, who passed away on September 23, 2004.Kay is survived by her four children: James M.
