Kathryn Marsh Medley

Kathryn Marsh Medley, age 90, a longtime resident of Los Gatos, California and recently of Dover, died peacefully March 13, 2017 in Community Hospice Truman House at New Philadelphia, Ohio.

Born in Dover on December 10, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Victor R. and Gladys P. Snyder Marsh.

Katy was a 1944 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and continued her education at Ohio Wesleyan University. In 1949 she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree.

Katy’s faith was nurtured as a child and in her early adulthood at the First United Church of Christ in New Philadelphia where she enjoyed singing alongside her beloved sister, Elly, and her father, Victor.

She later worshiped at Saratoga Presbyterian Church after moving to California with her late husband, Harold C. Medley, who preceded her in passing on December 8, 2004. There she was also a member of the Montalvo Service Group, the Stephen Ministry, and the church choir. Katy also enjoyed her friendships with the Elbon Singers and the South Bay Silk Artists.

Katy had a beautiful spirit, full of joy and peace. In her earlier years, Katy also enjoyed her memberships with the Music Study Club and the College Club in Tuscarawas County.

Katy had a beautiful soprano voice and performed in Carousel, South Pacific, Music Man, The Sound of Music, and Guys and Dolls at the local Little Theatre.

Katy was a talented artist. She made several extra large snow sculptures including a 12-foot tall cowboy, a rhinoceros, and a lion, which appeared regularly in The Times Reporter. She expressed her artistic talent through intricate hand-sewn pieces of embroidery and applique. She painted in oil, and made beautiful original designs painted on silk.

She had an adventurous spirit. Katy was a dedicated Red Cross swimming instructor and loved being in the water. While in Yellowstone National Park, she would awake before dawn to hike the mountains and streams in search of trumpeter swans, bighorn sheep, and elk. She found them all. Katy also rode in a hot air hot air balloon, and went parasailing at age 65.

Katy will be deeply missed by her daughters, Cindy (Larry) Sealy of Huntsville, Alabama, and Laurie J. Urfer of Missoula, Montana; her grandchildren, Sarah Urfer, Shane Sealy, and Kristen Sealy; as well as her sister, Victoria Ann Warner of Sarasota, Florida and her brother Victor Russell Marsh, Jr. and wife Patricia of Canton, Ohio.  She also will be remembered fondly by her numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents and sister, Eleanor Marsh Kirk, Katy was preceded in passing by her beloved daughter, Stephanie Sue Urfer on June 16, 2010.

A memorial service celebrating Katy’s life will be held in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover, 5600 N. Wooster Ave., on Saturday March 18, 2017 beginning at 2 PM with Pastor Brian Flood officiating. A reception will follow in the funeral home’s hospitality room.
