Katherine Edna Winkler Byers, 86, of New Philadelphia, died Monday morning, January 6, 2003 in Union Hospital. Born October 21, 1916 in the Schoenbrunn area of New Philadelphia, she was the only daughter of the late Elmer and Emma Prysi Winkler. Katherine attended school at New Philadelphia before working as a cook at the former Dutch Oven Restaurant. In 1984, she retired as a cook from the Schoenbrunn Racquet Club. In her private time, she enjoyed cooking for family gatherings, reading and was an avid baseball fan. Katherine’s family will miss the poetry and prayers she often composed especially for holiday and family gatherings. On New Year’s Eve, 1943, she married her husband Kenneth G. Byers who, after twenty-five years of marriage, preceded her in death on May 23, 1969. Survivors include two sons; William R. (Fran) Byers of New Philadelphia and Jeffery (Dorothea) Byers of West Virginia, three granddaughters; Kimberley K. Watt, Nichole L. (Jerry) Knight, both of New Philadelphia and Jennifer L. (Mark) Reese of Dover, a great-grandson; Jordan R. Watt, and two brothers; Delbert (Margaret) Winkler of Canoga Park, CA, and Glenn (Jane) Winkler of Canal Fulton, O, one sister-in-law; Jackie Winkler of Stow, O, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded her in death by two brothers; Harold and Robert Winkler. Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 7 PM at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home. Rev. Jim Borton of the First Christian Church will officiate a funeral service Thursday at 11AM in the Chapel of the funeral home. Burial, alongside her husband, will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. Those unable to attend are invited to express condolences, sign an online guestbook and visit a memorial of Mrs. Byers on the funeral home’s website.
