Joseph S. Day, 73, died peacefully in his Midvale home surrounded by his loving family, including his dog “Penny” early Monday evening, December 1, 2003.Joe was born in Union Township, Tuscarawas County, on June 19, 1930 to the late Joseph F. and Bernice V. Walker Day. After attending Midvale High School, he joined the U. S. Army for two years and was honorably discharged in 1950. On June 20, 1952, Joe married Lois M. Eberly, in Dennison where Doc and Arlene Kinsey stood for the couple. 1952 was also the year Joe started working for Greer Steel Co. He retired from there in 1992 as a slitterman. A hard-working man, Joe also worked for Clum Tire while rearing his family. When not working, he enjoyed working on and restoring cars. Joe also liked gardening, but will be most remembered for being a wonderful husband, dad and grandpa.He is survived by his wife, Lois; children, Vickie Hykes of New Philadelphia, Pat Day of Uhrichsville, Doug (Marilee) Day of Dennison and Chris (Jerry) Arnold of Midvale; grandchildren, Melissa Day and Troy “Shorty” (Eileen Pratt) Day; Dana Gregg; Dakota Arnold; Frank Hykes and Eric Hykes; great-grandchildren, Taylor Day, Jayme Hykes, Colton Hykes and Ridge Hykes; brother, Wayne (Ethel) Day of Roxford; sisters, Doris Schumacher of Goshen and Hazel (Donald) Graff and sister-in-law, Lillian Day, all of New Philadelphia; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, and his very good friend and his wife, Ed and Dolly Canfield. Besides his parents, Joe was preceded in death by two brothers, Ivan and Norman Day, and a son-in-law, Frank Hykes.Visitation will be Thursday evening, December 4, 2003 from 5:00 to 9:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home, New Philadelphia. Cremation will follow at Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory.Contributions may be made to Hospice of Tuscarawas Valley, 201 W. Third St., Dover, OH 44622.
