Joseph Charles Monte, age 90 of New Philadelphia died Thursday, December 21, 2017, in New Dawn Retirement Center at Dover following a period of declining health.
Born on April 20, 1927 at Roswell, Joe was a son of the late John and Elizabeth Ann (Kornish) Monte.
Joe was a graduate of the former Midvale High School and a longtime member of the former St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church at Roswell where he and his wife, the former Mary-Lee Varadi, married on November 25, 1952. For the past three decades, Joe’s faith was nurtured at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at New Philadelphia.
A lifelong businessman, Joe owned and operated Monte’s grocery store at Roswell for many years and later ventured into other businesses that included real estate investment and building.
Joe loved traveling and spent many winters with his wife in Clearwater, Florida. He will long be remembered for his animated stories and sharing of reflections on his childhood and life adventures. Joe loved being outdoors. He spent countless hours on his pontoon boat at Atwood Lake and in his younger years, enjoyed hunting and making fishing trips to Canada.
In addition to his wife of 65 years, Joe is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth (husband, Brad) Schumacher of Tuscarawas, and Mary Jo (husband, Michael) Monte-Kaser of New Philadelphia; his grandchildren, Devin Schumacher of Tuscarawas, Elyse (husband, Jared) Figgins of Uhrichsville; a great-grandson, Aiden Figgins; his sister, Martha Dapoz of New Philadelphia; a sister-in-law, Anne Stull of Zoar and a brother-in-law, Ed (wife, Kaye) Varadi of Mineral City and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by an infant son, John Monte.
The family will greet guests on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 from 4-7 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where a Christian Wake service will begin at 6:45 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Jeff Coning on Wednesday, December 27 at 10:30 AM in Sacred Heart Church at New Philadelphia. Burial will follow in St. Elizabeth’s Cemetery at Roswell. Following services, all are invited to a meal and fellowship in St. Ambrose Hall, adjacent to Sacred Heart Church.
