Joseph Leon Knopp, Jr, age 79, of New Philadelphia, passed away on Monday, April 18, 2011 in Union Hospital at Dover, Ohio. Joseph was born on January 14, 1932, at Akron, Ohio, where he was known to most people as Sonny Knopp. He was the son of the late Joseph Knopp, Sr. and Clara Von Guenton Knopp.Joseph served in the Navy and enjoyed Amateur Radio and fishing at Lake Erie. He also liked to work on cars and computers and to shoot his gun. He worked as a Boiler Operator at Akron City Hospital and Timken Mercy Medical Center, where he retired in 1994. He also attended Belmont Tech at Cadiz. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Lucy Carpenter Knopp and four daughters; Janelle (Tom) Kurtz of McVeytown, PA, Jolene (Mike) Lallathin of Atwater, OH, Julie Wisener of Akron, OH and Lori (Chris) Marchese of TN; two step-daughters, Charlotte (Dave) Ellison and Wendy (Harvey) Studer; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and expecting two more this year; one nephew and four nieces. In addition to his parents, Joseph is preceded in death by one step-daughter, Sherry Armstead and two sisters, Kathy Huff and Shirley Ashworth.A service will be held on Friday, April 22, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the New Life Center Ministries at 1865 Roxford Street, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663, where he was a member. The family requests that instead of flowers, contributions be made to the New Life Center Ministries in loving memory of Joseph.Cremation care has been conducted through the Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory at Dover, Ohio.To share stories or express personal condolences to the family guests are invited to sign the online registry located on the funeral home’s website.
