Joseph Edward Martin, 83, of New Philadelphia, died Sunday, July 15, 2007, at Country Club Retirement Campus at Dover.A son of the late Joseph E. Martin Sr. and the late Rose Marie (Schill) Martin, Joe was born June 18, 1924 at Canton, Ohio.Joe attended Chaminade High School at Dayton, Ohio. Following high school, he enlisted with the United States Navy and served During World War II. Joe was employed by Ohio Power at Canton for many years where he served as a customer service manager.He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at New Philadelphia as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus. Joe was a member of the New Philadelphia American Legion also. Joe was a former mayor and councilman for the Village of Dennison and he was also a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Tuscarawas Campus of Kent State University.Joe is survived by two sons, Michael Martin of Detroit, Michigan and Thomas (Kay) Martin of Houston, Texas and one granddaughter, Michele (Tim) Hisnay of Cincinnati.He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Eloise Frances Martin who passed away on March 2, 2003; one sister and two brothers.Family and friends may call on Tuesday, July 17, 2007 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Monsignor George Schlegel on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church at New Philadelphia. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia. Memorial contributions may be made in Joe’s honor to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 West Third Street, Dover, OH 44622 and/or to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 163549, Columbus, OH 43216.
