John S. Underwood, 77, of Uhrichsville, died Monday morning January 23, 2006, in Mercy Medical Center at Canton, O. after a brief battle with cancer.The son of the late Clyde and Lula Bigler Underwood, John was born October 7, 1928 at Dennison, O. He graduated from Uhrichsville High School in 1946, and married Loueva “Lou” Jane Scott on April 11, 1948 in the First Methodist Church at Uhrichsville.Well known as “the telephone man” he retired from Ohio Bell after 32 years of service. John was an active member of the Old Town Valley Fliers, an avid ham radio operator with the Tusco Radio Club (W8GAC) for 50 years, a member of the Ohio Bell Pioneer Club and a member of the Dennison Eagles John also filmed Claymont football games for several years and was also an avid golfer playing with the Monday morning men’s league at Big Bend Golf Course. Although one would think all of these associations would keep him busy enough, he truly enjoyed traveling to Wheeling Island with his special longtime friends, Cal and Jean Creager.In addition to his wife John is survived by two daughters, Carol (Bill) Weaver and Joni (Rod) Baumberger of Uhrichsville: one son Jeff (Gayle) Underwood of Gnadenhutten; four grandsons Kelly Weaver and companion Debbie Sanner, Scott (Vonnie) Weaver and Brock Baumberger of Uhrichsville, John Scott Underwood II and companion Lindi Rogers of Gnadenhutten; three grand daughters, Kari Weaver and companion Davey Jones of Dennison, Tami (Mike) Neiniger and Kristy (Ryan) Vickers of Gnadenhutten and thirteen great grandchildren, Steven, Melissa, Kellie Jo, Trent, Tori, Kaitlyn, Austin, Drew, Evan, Kara, Austin, Clayton and Alec.In addition to his parents John is preceded in death by a sister Shirley Austin and one brother Chic.Visitation will be Wednesday January 25, 2006 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Robert James officiating.
