John Russell Avon

John Russell Avon, Sr., 89, of Stone Creek, died Friday, April 18, 2014 in Riverside Manor.

A son of the late James and Nettie (Warner) Avon, John was born December 3, 1924 at New Philadelphia, Ohio.

On July 29, 1947, John married the love of his life, the late Norma Dell (Orr) Avon who preceded him in passing on February 7, 2012. Together, they were members of Zion Lutheran Church.

John was a 1942 graduate of New Philadelphia High School. He joined the Stone Creek Brick Company in 1951, and worked there 36 years. He was the treasurer of the Local #538 Brick & Clay for 30 years.

John is survived by his sons, John R. Avon Jr. and David K. Avon both of Stone Creek and Kevin J. Avon of New Philadelphia; four grandsons, Matthew, David Allen, Kevin Jr. and Joshua Avon; a great grandson, Carter James Avon and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents and wife; 5 brothers; 3 sisters; and a daughter-in-law, Eileen Avon.

The family will receive friends on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. and again one hour prior to the service on Tuesday in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating John’s life will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Bill Haggis officiating. Burial will follow in Jerusalem Cemetery. Following the committal service, a memorial reception will be held in the fellowship hall of Zion Lutheran Church at Stone Creek.
