John Richard “Dick” Davis, age 82, of New Philadelphia, passed away Friday evening, July 17, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born April 10, 1927 in Canton, Ohio, he was the son of the late Charles Leroy and Anna Corrine (Stevenson) Davis.
Dick graduated from Uhrichsville High School in 1945 and then joined the United States Army, where he honorably served our country. Upon returning home from service, Dick married his wife, the former Helen Pauline Bertoline on August 26, 1950 in Sacred Heart Church at New Philadelphia.
Dick was a molder by trade having worked for I. F. Manufacturing in New Philadelphia for more than 30 years. He was a life member of the New Philadelphia V. F. W. Post #1445.
Most importantly, Dick enjoyed spending time with his family. Many memories were made while on camping trips to Tappan Lake and Pride Valley. He also restored furniture in his garage and took flying lessons at the Harry Clever Field in New Philadelphia.
In addition to Dick’s wife, he will be greatly missed by his children, Toni DeBois and Amy (Don) May, both of New Philadelphia and Bruce R. Davis of Canton; and six grandchildren, Jon-Paul DeBois, Chantelle DeBois, Jaime DeBois, Sarah Davis, Christopher May and Hunter May; one great-grandson, Hunter McKelly; his sister-in-law, Pat (Soc) DeMeo; and his brother-in-law, Terry (Deb) Bertoline of California.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mary Margaret Watkins.
Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 from 5 to 8 PM. A service celebrating his life will take place in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday July 22, 2009 beginning at 10:30 AM with Pastors Matt Roe and Louise Worsham officiating. Inurnment will follow the service in Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia where the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Post #1445 will render military honors. Friends and family are invited to the Geib Family Center, located adjacent to the funeral home, where a meal will be provided by the First Church of God church family immediately following the committal service.
