John R. Chamberlain, age 72, of Tuscarawas, and a longtime resident of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully Monday morning, June 22, 2009, in his home with his family at his side. Born at New Athens, Ohio, April 28, 1937, John was a son of the late Eugene and Elizabeth McGull Chamberlain. A 1955 graduate of New Philadelphia High School, Mr. Chamberlain entered the United States Army Air Corps and was stationed in France. While there, he met and fell in love with Angele Collard, who worked alongside him on the military base. The couple wed December 17, 1956 in France. A year later, John brought his bride and twin sons to the United States and settled in New Philadelphia where he would go to work for Gradall in 1959. His career there spanned thirty-four years until illness forced his retirement in 1993. A former member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, John was also a member of Tuscarawas Lodge #177 F.& A.M. He will be remembered as an avid hunter and fisherman and as a man who loved to cook and to tend to his garden. John will be best remembered as a master carver, possessing the skill and talent to carve from wood, detailed models of Gradall machines from his home workshop. Many of his carvings today are prized family heirlooms. In addition to his wife of fifty-two years, who resides at Tuscarawas, John leaves behind a family that includes twin sons, Jim (wife Rose) Chamberlain of Dover, Johnny (wife Vickie) Chamberlain of New Philadelphia, a daughter, Kelly (husband Rick) Stein of New Philadelphia, and sons, Jeff Chamberlain of Uhrichsville and Mike (wife Lori) Chamberlain of Dover. Nine grandchildren; Jimmy, Angele, Michelle, Andrea, Stephanie, Jason, Tiffany, Haley and Kaden, as well as numerous great-grandchildren and three close cousins, Vivian, Rose and Beverly, complete the family. Friends are invited to call Wednesday evening from 5PM â?? 7PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where a Masonic Lodge of Sorrow will commence at 7PM. Hospice Chaplain Brian Flood will lead Mr. Chamberlain’s memorial service Thursday morning at 10:30 in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial with military honors will follow in Union Cemetery at Cadiz.
