John Patric Rice, age 66, of Carrollton, died unexpectedly, Wednesday, October 22, 2014 while doing what he loved best, farming.
A son of the late John W. and Clara C. (Aul) Rice, John was born at Canton, Ohio on December 19, 1947.
John was a 1966 graduate of Sandy Valley High School and following graduation, proudly served the United States Navy for four years as an Electronics Technician.
His family has farmed the tri-county area since the 1850’s and upon returning from the Navy; John joined his uncle, Roy Rice, in the operation of the family business. Together, they grew the farm to a large grain and beef operation. Today, the family business remains strong as John was joined by his daughter, Kelly, who has worked alongside her father for the past number of years.
In his spare time, John was an avid reader; he enjoyed airplanes, traveling and taking fishing trips with his wife and friends to Canada. He was a longtime member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church at Carrollton where he was active on the Parish Council, a member of the choir, served as a lector, and was a member of the building committee. He had also served on the board of directors for the Carrollton Farmer’s Exchange.
Above all, John was active in the lives of his family and greatly enjoyed being a grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, the former Anita Giumenti; his daughters, Jennifer (David) Thompsen of Clifton, IL and Kelly (Chris) Chaney of Sandyville; his grandchildren, Hannah, Benjamin, Katie and Joe Thompsen and John Chaney; his sisters, Virginia C. Rice of New Philadelphia and Peggy (Bill) McFarren of Granville, OH; a brother-in-law, Jerry Decsi of North Carolina and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Decsi.
The family will greet guests on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 from 1:00 – 4:00 PM and 6:00 – 9:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. An additional visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 from 10:00 – 11:00 AM in Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 616 Roswell Rd SW, Carrollton, OH 44615 where a Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated by Father Anthony Batt and Father Dale Tornes. Immediately following the service a meal will be shared by all in the church social hall. Burial in the Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia will take place at 3:00 PM on Wednesday.
