John O. Bose, age 88, of Strasburg, died peacefully, Tuesday Morning, February 27, 2007, surrounded by his daughters and their families, in Union Hospital at Dover. Born October 4, 1918 at Beach City, John was the last surviving of five children born to the late Harry and Minola Harrold Bose. John attended high school at Beach City graduating in 1936. A self-taught man, John worked for many years as a tool and die engineer, where he earned a reputation for excellence and penchant for perfection. Drafted into the United States Navy where he participated in the Naval Air Corps during World War II, John returned home with an appreciation of great craftsmanship. For more than thirty years, John was an engineer with various companies including Republic Steel, Hercules and ultimately the former Tyson Roller Bearing at Massillon until his retirement in 1981. John had the gift of vision as a woodcarver, knife maker and collector. The Bose family will cherish the many items crafted by his talented hands. John also enjoyed traveling to area auctions and flea markets dickering with those in the trade. Mr. Bose was a longtime member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church at Beach City, was a member of the Willandale Golf Club, the Beach City American Legion, and the Buckeye Bassett Hound Club of Ohio. For many years, John reared Bassett hounds for hunters from around the country. In the twilight of his life, he delighted in playing cards Â? especially with a card club that he and his wife had participated in for more than sixty-five years. Mr. Bose also enjoyed playing golf, – his last round on an unseasonably warm day last month. During a car ride through Navarre with a friend on a warm summer day in 1936, John spotted the former Betty Bash. The two dated for the next seven months before eloping to West Virginia to marry the day before Valentine’s Day, 1937. Just two weeks ago, they observed their 70th wedding anniversary. John was very proud of his family.In addition to his wife Betty of Strasburg, the Bose family includes three daughters, Sandra (Duane) Immel of Dundee, Linda (Charles) Davis and Sherri (Terry) Garber, all of Strasburg. Grandpa Bose will be sadly missed by nine grandchildren, Connie (Bill) Ray of Canal Winchester, Ohio, Janine (Michael) Flood of Granville, Ohio, Lynne (Matt) Johnson, Todd (Cathy) Immel of Dundee, Laura (Sam) Sulzener of New Philadelphia, Gregory (Amy) Davis of Strasburg, Sharon (Wes) Hostetler of Strasburg, Mandy (Trevor) Klar, and Jake (Fiancé Erika Jasper) Garber of Columbus. Sixteen great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren complete the family. John also anticipated the births of another great-grandchild and also his first great-great-grandchild.In addition to his parents, Mr. Bose is preceded in death by a grandson, Richard C. Immel, by his sisters Berniece and Maude and by two brothers, Lawrence and Orrin. Pastor David Craig and the Reverend Steven Court will co-officiate a private family service Friday in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover with interment in Dundee Cemetery. There are no public calling hours. The Bose family requests that memorial contributions be made to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 230 West Main Street, Beach City, Ohio, 44608, or to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 West Third Street, Dover Ohio, 44622. Arrangements are through the care and direction of the Geib Funeral Center at Dover.
