John Phillips, 79, of Dover, died Saturday morning, April 26, 2008 in Union Hospital at Dover.Born August 25, 1928 in Polland, Ohio, he was the son of the late John and Effie (Rice) Phillips. John was raised by the late Clara and Jesse Miller in Gnadenhutten before moving to New Philadelphia in the 70’s.After completing his formal education, John joined the United States Army where he honorably served our country until 1956. Then, he began his professional career, retiring from Marlite. He was a member of the Broadway United Methodist Church.John greatly enjoyed his time at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center in recent years. He enjoyed playing cards and eating lunch there.Together, with his late wife, the former Donna Schumacher, they reared two daughters, Judy (Roger) Whyte of New Philadelphia and the late Lois Wayts.John is also survived by his granddaughter, Michelle (Tom) Scott of Adamsville, O; his great-grandchildren, Marissa and Joshua Scott; his son-in-law, Kenny Wayts of New Philadelphia; his sister, Jane Hammond of Newcomerstown; and his companion, Jeanne Ickes of Dover.In addition to his parents, wife and daughter, John was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Mizer and Edith Harlow and one brother, Charles Miller.A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 28, 2008, in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home Chapel beginning at 11:00 a.m. with Pastors Larry Hostetler and John’s grandson, Tom Scott, co-officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Monday in the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Sharon Moravian Church Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to the Geib Family Center, located adjacent to the funeral home, where a meal will be served following the committal service.
