John Hooper, 69, of Mineral City, died suddenly on Monday, December 4, 2006 in Aultman Hospital at Canton.A son of the late Joe and Elizabeth (Kuhn) Hooper, John was born September 9, 1939 in Louisville, Ohio.John attended Sandy Valley High School and following High School, he enlisted with the United States Army. He served in Germany where he drove transport trucks carrying supplies to different bases. John retired from the Timken Company in Canton in 1999 after 35 years of service.He was vice president of the Father & Son Hunting Club in East Sparta as well as a member of the Greater Stark County Retiree Club of the AFL-CIO. John enjoyed traveling with his wife in his motor home to places such as Texas and Florida and he enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre. He was also an avid fisherman.He is survived by his loving wife, Marguerite (Ruppert) Hooper, whom he married June 6, 1981; one daughter, Jennifer Hooper of Canton; step-children, William Smitley of New Philadelphia, Donna Coen of Taylor, Michigan, Clifford Smitley of Stone Creek, Michael Weaver of Tuscarawas and Donald Weaver of Mineral City; 10 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; one brother; Joe Hooper of Akron; and step-brothers, Joel Hooper of Pennsylvania, Harry Weimer of Maryland and Clarence Swonger of Canton.John was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Betty Lutz and one grandson, Clifford Smitley, Jr.Family and friends may call in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Thursday, December 7, 2006 from 4 to 7 p.m. A funeral service celebrating John’s life will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Chapel with Rev. Mick Foster officiating. Burial will be held in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens at Dover where the Dover V.F.W. Post 3463 will perform military honors services. Following the committal a memorial reception will be held in the Geib Family Center at New Philadelphia.
