John Edward “Sonny” Schlegel Sr.

John Edward “Sonny” Schlegel Sr., 80, of Parral, died unexpectedly at his home on Monday, December 21, 2015.

A son of the late Walter E. and Carrie (Zehnder) Schlegel, John was born January 30, 1935 at Baltic, Ohio.

John was a longtime former mayor of Parral and he retired from Baker Hi-Way Express after 42 years of service. He enjoyed spending summers in Canada and was a talented woodworker.

He is survived by his children, John (Tracy) Schlegel Jr. of New Philadelphia, Suzanne Komaromy of Dover and Deborah (Vern) Troyer of Strasburg; nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren; two sisters, Kaye (Jim) Jones of Sugarcreek and Lana (Bill) Ricker of Dover and a sister-in-law, Marie Bair of Wilmot.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna (Bair) Schlegel whom he married on February 18, 1956 and a son-in-law, Chuck Komaromy.

Visitation will be held on Monday, December 28, 2015 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover. A funeral service celebrating John’s life will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. James H. Humphrey officiating. A luncheon will be held in the Hospitality Room in the funeral home following the service.
