John E. Grier, age 81, of Dover and The Glens at Atwood Lake, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 12, 2012 in Union Hospital at Dover.
Born at Barnesville, Ohio, Christmas Eve 1930, he was a son of the late Frank and Genevieve Byers Grier.
A talented high school basketball player, John graduated from Barnesville High School in 1949 and attended Ohio University before embarking on a thirty-two year career in the meat department within the Big Bear location at Newark and the New Philadelphia Harts Store before retiring in 1992.
John remained active his entire life, joining his wife in the operation of the concession stand at Atwood Lake Park. The couple loved being on the beach, on the water, and have summered for many years in a cottage situated at Atwood Glens.
He’ll be remembered for his natural ability to put people around him at ease. John enjoyed getting to know folks from all walks of life, especially the families whom he served whether from the grocery or concession stand. As a Friend of Bill for more than forty years, John was always available to help others make positive decisions and improve their lives.
When not spending free time boating or fishing on the lake, John enjoyed bowling and visiting Wheeling Downs. Family vacations for Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, will be long remembered.
Survivors include his wife, the former Helen Cooper also of Dover and Atwood Lake, whom he wed October 11, 1966.
Together they reared a family that includes a daughter Jennifer (husband, Shaun) Immel of Dover, and a son Jim Cumpston of Columbus, Ohio.
He’ll be sadly missed by his grandchildren Zachary, Rachel, and Evelyn Immel, Brian Fouts, and Sherry Cooper Todd.
A son-in-law, Dan Fouts of East Canton, and a sister, Sally (husband, Bob) Tallman of Barnesville, Ohio, completes the family.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by a daughter, Patty Fouts.
