John Dutton, 99, of Mineral City, died in Community Hospice House April 15, 2016 after celebrating his 99th birthday this past Sunday.
Born in New Cumberland on April 10, 1917, he was the son of the late Emery Clyde and Harriett Edna (Ryan) Dutton. After graduating from Sherrodsville High School, John worked professionally in a number of roles.
He operated steam engine combines in the 30’s out west. Then, worked various railroad jobs and for Hercules Motors. John owned and operated the 212 Riding Academy and also sold real estate for the Dutton Agency. Later in his life, he was a school bus driver and until the past few weeks, he managed the operations of his family farm in the Atwood Lake region.
John’s faith was nurtured at Holmes United Methodist Church where he was a longtime member with his wife, Laura Mae (Ricklic) Dutton. John and Laura married March 31, 1941 and had the blessing of celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary this year.
In addition to Laura, he will be missed by his children, Wanda (Doral Paul) McCartney and J. Ryan Dutton, both of Atwood Lake; his grandchildren, Amanda (Alan) Yingling of Sharon, PA, Casey O. McCartney of Mineral City, JR (Meredith Casto) Dutton of Tallmadge, and Tyler Dutton of Atwood Lake; his great-grandchildren, Nathanial, Madison, Bethann, and Courtnee Yingling; his great-great-grandchildren, Ava Yingling and Shawn Paden; his sister-in-law, Lillian Dutton; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins and good friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Evangeline “Sis” (Raymond) Fox, Dwight “Tom” (Myra Fair) Dutton, Maurice “Pete” Dutton, Katharine (Clyde) Shaffer and Gloria Dutton; his infant grandchild, Hattie Tess McCartney; and his daughter-in-law, Sue Dutton.
Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. A service celebrating John’s life will be held in the funeral home chapel Tuesday at 11 am with Pastor Roger Warnes officiating. Burial will follow in Holmes Church Cemetery.
