John Dale Winters, 80, of New Philadelphia, died Saturday, March 6, 2010 in Union Hospital at Dover.A son of the late Jesse and Nellie (Wise) Winters, John was born April 19, 1929 in his childhood home at New Philadelphia.On February 19, 1949, John married the former Janet Smith and together the couple reared four children, Michael, Judy, Susan and Steven. Three years later, he left for the military and honorably served in the United States Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954.John was employed for many years at East Sparta Ceramic. He was a member of the New Philadelphia V.F.W., the New Philadelphia Army-Navy Club as well as the New Philadelphia Eagles. John enjoyed tending to his gardens and was very fond of his faithful companion, his dog, Bingo.He is survived by his loving wife, Janet Winters; his children, Michael Winters of Canton, Judy (Klaus) Weber of New Philadelphia, Susan (David) Wojcik of Sherrodsville and Steven (Tonya) Winters of New Philadelphia; his grandchildren, Scott and Michael Winters, Melissa Page and Brandon Kandel, Joshua and Cody Metcalf and Vincent, Elizabeth and Mallory Winters; his great grandchildren, Taesjha and Caoilainn Winters, Lucas Gerber, Evan Kandel and Madilyn and Jaden Metcalf and many nieces and nephews.John was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Alan Winters and a brother, Bill Winters.The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating John’s life will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Max Canfield officiating. Burial will follow in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia with the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Post #1445 rendering military honors.Contributions may be made in John’s memory to the American Heart Association, Ohio Valley Affiliate, P.O. Box 182039, Columbus, OH 43218.
