John A. Ciereszewski, age 86, formerly of Dover, died Thursday, March 20, 2008, in Schoenbrunn Health Care Center at New Philadelphia following a lengthy illness. Born August 2, 1921, at Dillonvale, Ohio he was a son of the late John Ciereszewski and Veronica Jablonski.John was a World War II veteran who served a tour of duty in Rhineland and Central Europe. He earned a Purple Heart, The Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Medal as well as several other medals of honor for his time served.On June 1, 1946, John married the former Mary Checca at Tiltonsville, Ohio and later relocated to the Tuscarawas Valley. For many years, John and Mary enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and abroad, returning to Europe as a civilian on a tour through Paris, France. As an employee of the Norfolk and Southern Railway, John served as a railway conductor and brakeman on the freight lines for over 34 years prior to his retirement in 1982.Most of all John had a giving heart and would do anything he could for others especially his grandchildren.He is survived by one son, Darrel (Susie) Ciereszewski of New Philadelphia; four grandchildren, Adam (Rachel) Ciereszewski, Michael Ciereszewski, Meg (Chris) Greene and Jennifer Unrue; and four great-grandchildren, Chandler and Sarah Ciereszewski, and John and Harold Unrue.Also surviving are two brothers, Joe (Esther) Ciereszewski of Michigan, Ed (Emma) Ciereszewski of Norwalk, Ohio; and a sister, Ann (Chase) Veloski of Tennessee as well as numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, who passed away on January 25, 2005, and a son, Jerome.In keeping with John’s wishes, Father William Arnold will conduct private services in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Holy Cross Cemetery at Akron.Those wishing to do so may send personal condolences to the family and sign the online guest registry located on the funeral home website.The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Salvation Army, 301 N.
