John Charles Winkler

John Winkler, Sr., 87, New Philadelphia, died early Tuesday morning, April 26, 2005 at Union Hospital in Dover.Born in Biedler (near Goshen), in Tuscarawas County on November 24, 1917, John was the son of the late Alexander and Lora (Rhodes) Winkler. He was a l935 graduate of New Philadelphia High School, and attended and played basketball for Fenn State (later Cleveland State) University, and attended Ohio State University.A former teacher at New Cumberland Elementary School, John later worked as a farmer and carpenter. He was a charter member of Carpenters’ Local #69, a life-member and former administrator of the Dover Moose Lodge through which he had earned the Pilgrim degree, and a member of the Dover Elks. John was an avid sports fan, enjoying basketball, baseball, and football, and enjoyed bowling on several local leagues.He will be greatly missed by his wife, the former Dorothy Aslinger, whom he married April 9, 1988; his son, John C. (Esta) Winkler, Jr. of New Philadelphia; daughters, Donna Wallace and her companion, Debbie Fugit, of Las Vegas, NV, Debbie Campbell of Canton, and Vinicia (Rick) Schwartz of New Philadelphia; son, Louis Nolan of New Philadelphia; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Eugene Nolan; and one sister, Helen Kersten.Visitation will be at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory in New Philadelphia on Thursday evening, April 28, between the hours of 5 and 8 p.m. and Friday morning, April 29, between 10 and 11 a.m. A special service of tribute will be performed by the Moose Pilgrim Ritual Team Thursday evening at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Hugh B. Berry on Friday morning, April 29, at 11:00 p.m. Following the service, the family will greet friends at a memorial reception hosted by the Dover Ladies of the Moose at the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the funeral home.Memorial contributions may be made to Dover Moose Lodge #707, 307 N.
