John C. Varner

John C. Varner, Jr. age 88 of Dover, passed away Sunday, June 21, 2009, in Country Club Retirement Campus at Dover.Born April 23, 1921 in Kingwood, West Virginia, he was the son of the late John C. and Beatrice (Wilson) Varner, Sr. After completing his high school education, John joined the United States Army Air Corp where he honorably served our country as an air traffic controller.John spent his professional career as a semi-truck driver and heavy equipment operator. He worked for various transfer companies and also assisted with interstate construction. In recent years, he enjoyed participating in a variety of activities at the Country Club Retirement Campus.He is survived by his step-daughters, Donna Goodwin (Don) Barr of Sherrodsville and Karen (Greg) Williams of Fairmont, West Virginia; his two children, Judith Ritchie and John C. Varner, III, both of Ohio; his sister-in-law, Evelyn Varner of Fairmont, WV; his grandchildren, Jon (Joy) Gorbey II, Sondra (Ben) Jaberg, and Amanda (Joey) Riddle; three great-grandchildren, Corey Gorbey, and Sarah and Evan Jaberg, all of New Philadelphia; and nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents and his wife, the late Betty (Hall) Varner, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Varner; and his sister, Doris Jean Brock.A gathering of family and friends will be held Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Country Club Retirement Center in Dover.Memorial contributions in John’s memory may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.
