Joanne Carmack

Joanne Carmack age 83, of New Philadelphia, passed away, Tuesday, March 5, 2024, following a three-year battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) while in the care of Park Village Health Care Center at Dover.  

Born on January 14, 1941, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Joanne was a daughter of the late Joseph and Agnes Aitken Luxbacher. 

She was a 1958 graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School and began her college education at the University of Pittsburgh where she studied Chemistry. She then began her nursing studies at the former Saint Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1962. As a nurse, Joanne spent the majority of her career in various departments and positions with Union Hospital at Dover. 

Joanne was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in New Philadelphia where she served as a member of the Altar Society. Joanne enjoyed traveling with her husband, on various Warther and McMillen tours. She also loved ceramic work, crafts, reading and found great joy in spending time with her family as she attended various activities and sporting events of her children and grandchildren.  

She is survived by her family that includes her daughter, Caryn (Andy) Duckworth of Louisville, OH; son, Tim (Lynne) Carmack of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Caitlin (husband, Javier Lopez) Duckworth, Christian (Claire) Duckworth, Joseph (companion, Alexandria Anastasopoulos) Duckworth, Dana (fiancé, Cameron Snow) Carmack, and Kiersten Carmack; and great-grandchildren George “GEO” Duckworth, and Lola Duckworth, as well as her nieces and nephews.  

In addition to her mother and father, Joanne is preceded in death by her husband, of nearly 60 years, George Carmack, who died on May 17, 2023; and two sisters, Margie Ragano and Jayne Donati.  

Father Jeff Coning will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 10:30 AM in Sacred Heart Catholic Church at New Philadelphia. Burial alongside her husband will follow in Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia. Guests are invited to join the family in the church’s Parish Center following services.
