Joan “Jo” Helen Murray, 94, of New Philadelphia, passed away under the care of Community Hospice in New Dawn Nursing Home on June 20, 2018 following a short period of declining health.
Born in Columbus on September 5, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Catherine (Kenkel) Altermatt. Jo graduated from Holy Rosary High School. Jo also attended The Ohio State University for nurses’ training.
Jo married the love of her life, the late Dr. Ernest Leroy Murray, Jr. Together they were blessed with the birth of two sons, Doug and Ron.
Jo’s faith was nurtured at Sacred Heart Church where she was a member of the LCBA. She was a member of the Chestnut Society, where she served as a board member, and the Chi Omega Sorority. For more than 50 years, Jo gave generously of her time with the Union Hospital Auxillary. She loved playing bridge with her friends and enjoyed many wonderful weekends with her Sticky Wicket group.
She will be deeply missed by her sons, Doug Murray and Ron Murray, both of New Philadelphia; her sister, Martha Cella of Columbus, her grandchildren, Jason (Rachel) Murray of Wooster and Rachel Devine of Seattle, Washington; great-grandchildren, Liam and Olivia Murray; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Jo was preceded in passing by her twin brother, Jack Altermatt; and three sisters.
Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Monday, June 25, 2018, from 4 to 7 PM A service celebrating Jo’s life will be held Tuesday, June 26, 2018 in the funeral home chapel beginning at 10:30 AM with Father Jeff Coning officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia.
