Joan E. Hizer, age 75, of New Philadelphia, died Wednesday, February 14, 2024, while in the care of Community Hospice’s Truman House, following a period of declining health.
Born in Twin City Hospital at Dennison, Joan was a daughter of the late Thomas and Mildred Singer Shaw. She was a member of the first graduating class from Claymont High School and furthered her education at Kent State University where she obtained a Bachelor of History.
On April 11, 1971, Joan married C. Thomas Hizer and together raised a family of four sons. Joan cared deeply for her family and together she and Tom enjoyed supporting their sons in various sporting and band events.
Joan was an avid reader who also loved watching HGTV, working outside in her yard, mowing grass, going to garage sales, and caring for her family pets.
In addition to her husband of 52 years, Joan is survived by her sons, Nicholas (Misty) Hizer of Bedford, Pennsylvania, Nathan (Hedda) Hizer of Prescott, Arizona, and Matt (Laci) Hizer of New Philadelphia; and eight grandchildren, Nyah, Liev, Isla, Imogen, Willoughby, Michael, Lucy, and Leah.
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by a son, Eric Hizer, and a sister, Grace Shaw.
A Celebration of Life Service will be led by Reverend Carolyn Behrendt on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 1:00 PM in the First Presbyterian Church at Dennison. A reception will be held in the church social hall following the service, where the family will greet guests.
