Joan Elizabeth Ervin, 82, of New Philadelphia, passed away Friday, January 2, 2004, at Union Hospital in Dover after a brief illness.Born June 14, 1921 in New Washington, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Bernard R. and Anna J. (Martin) Kaple Sr.. After graduating high school, she attended and graduated from nursing school and was a registered nurse for many years. She was also a member of Sacred Heart Church in New Philadelphia.On June 14, 1943, Joan married Charles L. Ervin who survives her, in addition to her sons, Michael C. (Linda L.) Ervin and Patrick H. (Roxanne) Ervin, all of New Philadelphia.Joan is also survived by five grandchildren, Melissa (Mike) Tuttle, Shelley Wilson, Kelly Ervin, Steven Ervin, and Christopher Ervin; four great-grandchildren, Cody Tuttle, Michael McDaniel, Jacob and Travis Wilson, all of New Philadelphia; one sister, Patricia (Sonny)Wechter, Ohio; and two brothers, James (Doris) Kaple and Donald (Dorothy) Kaple, all of New Washington, Ohio.She was preceded in death by four brothers, Bernard “Bud” Kaple, Jr., Vincent Kaple, John Kaple, and Father Timon Kaple; two sisters, Martina Schakelford and Dolly Uhl; and one great-grandson, Cory Tuttle.Friends are invited to celebrate Joan’s life at a memorial mass on Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at St. Bernard’s Church in New Washington, Ohio beginning at 11 AM. A graveside service will immediately follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery. In keeping with Joan’s wishes, there will be no calling hours.
