Jimmie L. Cochran, age 72, of New Philadelphia, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012 in Akron General Hospital from injuries sustained in a motor scooter accident.

A son of the late James and Alice (Henry) Cochran, Jim was born on August 29, 1939 in his family’s New Philadelphia home.

He attended New Philadelphia High School and entered into the United States Navy in 1956 and proudly served his country until 1959.

Following his discharge, he began to work for Reeves Steel at Dover and in 1997, retired from the former steel mill as an employee of Empire-Detroit Steel.

Jim loved being out-of-doors and did anything he could to be in the sun. He greatly enjoyed riding motorcycles and bicycles, boating, spending time on the beach as well as being a health and fitness enthusiast. Those who knew Jim best also knew his love for telling jokes and being the one to play practical jokes on others.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, the former Judy Hawkins, whom he married on July 14, 1973; a son, Mike (Jill) Corpman; a grandson, Jake Corpman, whom he affectionately called “Little Buddy” all of Sherrodsville; and his other children, Brian, Kelly, Lisa and Kim.

Completing the family are three sisters, Joy (Ralph) Huff of New Philadelphia, Alice (John) Bittikofer of Dover, Marilyn (Don) Hale of Florida; a brother, Carl Cochran of Akron and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 11, 2012 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service led by Rev. Hugh B. Berry will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 1:00 PM in the funeral home’s chapel. Military honors and a committal service will be held following services at the funeral home’s flagpole.

Immediately following public services, the family wishes to invite guests to join them Geib Family Center for a time of food and fellowship.

Private burial will take place in the Salem Evans Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Jim’s name may be directed to a charity of the donor’s choice.
