Jesse Sandy, 80, of Dover, died Sunday, October 17, 2010 in Park Village Assisted Living at Dover following a courageous battle with cancer.A son of the late Samuel and Mary (DiNino) Sandy, Jesse was born May 23, 1930 at Dover, Ohio.Jesse was a 1948 graduate of Dover High School. Then, on August 9, 1952, he married the love of his life, Mary Joan Witham. The couple shared 49 years of marriage prior to Mary’s passing on September 5, 2001.In 1949, Jesse started a career with Commercial Honing as a maintenance man. His career spanned 42 years and he eventually retired in 1991 as President of the company. Following his retirement, Jesse partnered with his sons, Ron and Don, in the operation of R & J Cylinder & Machine, Inc.When not at work, Jesse could be found on the golf course; a game he loved his entire life. His passion for the game, lead him to serve as one of the founding partners of Oak Shadows Golf Course.Jesse was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at Dover and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. When he wasn’t playing golf he could be found in his wood shop. He loved working on any wood project his family wanted him to.He is survived by a daughter, Diann (Donald) Woosley of Johnstown, Ohio; two sons, Ronald (Sandra) Sandy of Dover and Donald (Carla) Sandy of New Philadelphia; his grandchildren, Brianne (Brett) Yackey of Dover, April (Tim) Gocha of Columbus, Lyndsie, Shannon and David Woosley all of Johnstown and Dominic, Courtney and Curtis Sandy all of New Philadelphia; two great grandchildren, Caden and Tristan Yackey; two brothers, Albert (Jane) Sandy and Vince (Jackie) Sandy both of Dover; a brother-in-law, Joseph Lanza of Dover and many nieces and nephews. Jesse was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Jolene Sandy who passed away March 8, 2006 and a sister, Julia Lanza.The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover with a Christian Wake service being held at 8 p.m. Father Matt Hoover and Father Steven Lanza will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at Dover. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery at Dover. Following the committal service, a memorial reception will be held in the Family Life Center at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
