Jerry Dean Gopp, age 74, of New Philadelphia, died Thursday, March 19, 2009, surrounded by his loving family, following a lengthy illness.Born on January 19, 1935, at New Philadelphia, Jerry was a son of the late Roland and Mary (Bour) Gopp.A 1953 graduate of New Philadelphia High School, Jerry soon entered into the United States Army and served on active duty for two years. For many years following, Jerry also was a member of the National Guard. Following his service with the Army, Jerry returned to the Tuscarawas Valley to marry the love of his life, the former Retha Collinsworth. The couple was married on November 23, 1956, and together, they reared three sons.Following 43 years of service to the Gradall Company as a welder, Jerry retired in 1996.A long-time member of the First Baptist Church at New Philadelphia, Jerry served as a deacon and as a member of the Bus Ministry for a number of years. He also played a vital role in Bible Publishing Ministry. Throughout his time at the church, Jerry was actively involved in many mission trips overseas.Jerry leaves behind his wife of 52 years and three sons, Randy, wife, Diana Gopp of New Philadelphia; Allen, wife, Kimberly Gopp of Hollywood, Maryland, and Todd, wife, Naomi Gopp of New Philadelphia; and a brother Terry Gopp also of New Philadelphia.Seven grandchildren, Jeremy, Nathan, Sarah, Rachel, Melissa, Allen II., and Connor Gopp; three step-grandchildren, Christina and Ryan Vitt, and Kaitlin Lescalett; three great-grandchildren, Hannah, Lily, and Chelsie Gopp; and a step-great-grandson, Caleb Metcalf completes the family.In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Gopp, and a granddaughter, Shannon Gopp.The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 22, 2009, from 3:00 â?? 6:00 PM in the First Baptist Church, 878 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia. Pastor Mark Trotter will lead a celebration of Jerry’s life in the church sanctuary on Monday, March 23, 2009, at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia where the New Philadelphia VFW, Carl C. Stoller Post 1445 will render military honors. Follow the services the family would like to invite guests to join them in “The Barn”, behind the First Baptist Church where a meal will be shared.Memorial contributions in Jerry’s name may be sent to the First Baptist Church Missions Fund, 878 Commercial Avenue, SW, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
