Jeanette Jean Jenkins

MISS JEANETTE JEAN JENKINS, 84, of Dover, died Thursday, September 26, 2002. She was born October 6, 1917 in New Philadelphia to the late L. Charles and Elizabeth A. Wassem Jenkins. Jeanette graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1935 and attended Kent State University, Tuscarawas campus. She took flying lessons at the New Philadelphia Airport in 1941 under the government’s Civilian Pilot Training program, which was conducted by Harry Clever. Jeanette was Tuscarawas county’s only World War II WASP (Womens Air Force Service Pilots) and served honorably with the U. S. Army from 1943 to 1944. Following the war, she worked for the Timken Company, retiring in 1978 after 24 years service. Among her activities, she served for fourteen years on the airport commission, was a life member of the “99’s” (International Women Pilot Organization), life member of the Dover Historical Society and the Tuscarawas County Historical Society and a member of the American Legion. She also served as president of the Dover-New Philadelphia BPW Club. Jeanette is survived by two nephews, Tom (Mary) Long of Oklahoma City, OK and Steve (Gloria) Long of Vancouver, WA. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Annabel Long. The graveside service will be Saturday, November 2, 2002 at 11:00 AM in the East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia with Rev. Glen Shedlock officiating. Military burial rites will be presented by the New Philadelphia VFW Post #1445. v
