Jean Margaret Wentz, 86, of Dover, Ohio and Wildwood, Florida, died peacefully Thursday evening , October 14, 2010, in Park Village Assisted Living Center at Dover following a period of declining health.A daughter of the late George and Violet (Thomas) Lorenz, Jean was born August 12, 1924 , the same birth date as her father, in Coshocton County, Ohio. Jean graduated from Fresno High School in 1942. While in high school, she was a member of the women’s basketball team that won the county championship. Jean then graduated from Bliss Business College in Columbus, Ohio. She married Arthur J. Wentz on April 15, 1944 in Pensacola, Florida. Jean was co-owner of Wentz Concrete and Supply in Newcomerstown and served as secretary/ treasurer. One of Jean’s greatest passions in life was golf. For the past 20 years, she had a home near Lake Miona Golf Course at Wildwood, Florida where she was also a member. Jean was also a member at Hickory Flats Golf Course at West Lafayette, Ohio where she participated in women’s leagues over the years, winning several club championships. When not playing golf, Jean enjoyed reading, using her computer, playing cards, entertaining family and friends, and traveling. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church at Dover.She is survived by her children, Lynne (Richard) Wentz Bassetti of New Philadelphia and Gregory (Nancy) Wentz of Jacksonville, Florida; her grandchildren, Christopher (Jan) Bassetti of North Canton, Carolyn Bassetti of St. Joseph, Michigan, Heather (Adam) Steinmetz of Allentown, Pennsylvania, Glenn (Ellie) Wentz of Greenville, South Carolina and Darin Wentz and Gregory Wentz II both of Jacksonville, Florida; her great grandchildren, Ethan and Juliana Wentz, Jack Byrnes and Grant and Dean Bassetti; a sister-in-law, Ann L. Lorenz of Fresno and many loving nieces and nephews.Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Arthur J. Wentz, a brother, Jon T. Lorenz and an infant sister, Ruth Ann Lorenz.The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Geib Funeral Center, 5600 North Wooster Avenue, Dover, OH 44622 and again one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. A funeral service celebrating Jean’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 11 a.m. in the funeral center with Rev. Bruce McLaughlin officiating. Immediately following the service, a memorial reception will be held in the Hospitality Room in the Geib Funeral Center. Burial will follow the luncheon in West Lawn Cemetery at Newcomerstown.The family suggests contributions may be made in Jean’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
