Jean A. Polen, 82, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully in the Hospice House on Monday, August 6, 2012 following a period of declining health.
Born in Dennison, Ohio on March 6, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Bartolo and Laboria M. (Marfisi) Calderone.
Jean attended St. Mary’s School and church in Dennison, O. as a child and young adult. Then, she transferred her membership to Sacred Heart Church in New Philadelphia where she was nurtured in faith as an adult.
Together with her late husband, Kenneth E. Polen, Jean raised seven children including Denny, Elaine, Vicki, LuAnn, Tim, Lori and Terry. She cared deeply for them and was a wonderful mother, wife, and grandmother.
Jean was well known for her delicious pies, and enjoyed cooking, playing cards and dancing. She also was a former member of the Dover V.F.W. and loved playing cards with friends.
She will be deeply missed by her children including Denny Polen and Elaine (Stephen) Stropky all of Dover, Vicki (Stan) Scott of Greenville, SC, LuAnn Kail of New Philadelphia, Tim (Sally) Polen of Massillon, Lori (Roy) Scriven and Terry (Tami) Polen all of New Philadelphia. She also leaves behind 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 1 step-granddaughter; 2 step-great-grandchildren; her brother, Richard “Dick” (Grace Ann) Calderon of New Philadelphia; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husband Kenneth, she also was preceded in death by her second husband, John Dummermuth; and an infant brother.
Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home on Thursday, August 9 from 10 to 11 a.m. Father Jeff Coning and her cousin, James Aiello, will lead a service celebrating Jean’s life in the funeral home’s chapel beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will follow the service in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Friends are invited to the Geib Family Center, located adjacent to the funeral home, where a meal will be shared following the committal service.
The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to all of the nurses, aides, and the staff of Hospice House.
