James W. Hothem 80, of 117 Buena Vista in Baltic, passed away October 23, 2003. Jim was born in Coshocton County to the late John and Priscilla (Buser) Hothem. He was a World War II Army veteran having been on Omaha Beach on D-Day, across the road from the “Malmedy Massacre”, and was with the first troops to cross the Rhine. After returning from the War, Jim owned and operated the Baltic since 1945 and retired in 1988. He was also a member of the Baltic United Methodist Church, Baltic American Legion, Baltic Conservation Club, Baltic Lions Club, member of West Lafayette Masonic Lodge F & AM, A.A.S.R. Valley of Canton and Tadmor Temple in Akron.On September 22, 1946 he married Joyce (Schlarb) Hothem and she survives. Also surviving are his 2 sons; Don Hothem of the home and Michael (Kathie) Hothem of Sugarcreek, 3 grandchildren; Kim (Tom) DeMatteo, Kevin (Staci) Stutzman and Chelsea Hothem, 2 great-grandchildren; Reed DeMatteo and Mason Stutzman, ans 2 sisters; Thelma (Atlee) Miller of Baltic and Betty Warren of West Lafayette. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law Jake Warren.Friends may call at the Baltic United Methodist Church on Sunday from 5 to 8 PM, where West Lafayette Masonic Lodge F & AM will hold Masonic services, and one hour prior to the service on Monday. Funeral services will be held on Monday October 27, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the church with Rev. Ed Williams officiating. Burial will take place at West Lawn Cemetery in Baltic where the Baltic American Legion will conduct Military Graveside Services. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Tuscarawas County Heart Association or to Hospice of Tuscarawas County.
