James T. Nelson

James T. Nelson, age 74, of Stone Creek, passed away peacefully Friday evening in Schoenbrunn Healthcare Center at New Philadelphia following a declining period of health.Born July 13, 1934 in Dalton, Georgia, he was the son of the late Charles C. Nelson and Mattie Mae Davenport Nichols.After completing his formal education, James joined the United States Army, honorably serving his country during the Korean War. He was the recipient of both the Purple Heart and Airborn Wings. He then met his wife, the former Jane E. Oglesby, with who he celebrated 52 years of marriage on October 17th. Throughout his lifetime, he has worked for a number of companies including Minerva Police Department where he retired as a sergeant, and most recently retiring from Kohn Transport as a general manager. Five years ago, James and Jane moved to Stone Creek where he enjoyed being outdoors. He was often seen cutting wood, mowing, or out working on his tractor. He also had a love for Bluegrass music.James will be deeply missed by his wife and their daughter and son-in-law, Valerie and John Craig of Stone Creek; his step-grandchildren, Gabriel (wife, Tina) Craig of Jewett and Christina (husband, Scott) Chubb of Columbus; and three sisters, Bobbie Scott of Robertsville, Rita Reffuse of Dahlonega, Georgia, and Betty Hawk of Minerva.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Horace Nelson and his sisters, Francis Mitchel and Gladys Shook.Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Monday, March 2 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service celebrating his life will take place in the funeral home’s chapel on Tuesday beginning at 10:30 am with Pastor Don Snow officiating. Military rites will be rendered by the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Post #1445 immediately following the service at the funeral home. Friends are then invited to share in a meal at the Geib Family Center.
