James L.D. Smith, 68, of Dover, passed away Tuesday evening, January 15, 2008 at his residence surrounded by his family, and special caregiver, his daughter-in-law Nikita.Born in Beach City, Ohio, on July 29, 1939, Jim was the son of the late Thomas H. Smith and Ethel E. Grinder.He attended Zoar School, and was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a painter and sandblaster and had most recently been employed by Stark Sandblasting; however his true love was carpentry and he was an accomplished woodworker.Jim enjoyed boating, golfing, bowling, fishing, working on his truck and model cars and especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a longtime member of the Dover Army Navy Club and the Dover Eagles.He is survived by his children, Rocky (Michelle) Dusenberry, of New Philadelphia, Tina (Bobby) Nalley, Jr., of Uhrichsville, Brent (Nikita) Smith, of Dover, Katherine M. (Mark) Contini, of Dover, J. Christopher A. (Allison) Smith, of Dover and Eric W. Smith, of New Philadelphia; brothers and sisters, Ronald L. (Virginia) Smith, of New Philadelphia, Barbara A. Norman, of Strasburg, John L.Smith, of Dover, Sandra K. Tyson, of Port Washington, and Sally J. (Richard) Nagel, of Nevada, O.; close friends, John (Hubba) Knecht, of Dennison and Terry Stewart, of Canton; 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by wives, Christine G. Smith and Christy Smith; a long time companion, Joanie Davis; brothers, Thomas and Clyde Smith and a sister Bernice Welsch.Visitation will be held Friday January, 18, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from noon till 1:00p.m. in the Geib Funeral Center of Dover. A service celebrating Jim’s life will be conducted in the Geib Funeral Center on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Brian Flood officiating.
