James ”jim” William Carlisle

James William “Jim” Carlisle, age 93 of New Philadelphia, passed away Thursday morning, September 22, 2011 in Union Hospital at Dover following complications of pneumonia. Born in New Philadelphia on February 5, 1918, he was the son of the late John Donaldson and Vera Leona (Serig) Carlisle. On November 4, 1928, Jim was baptized and was an active member of Community of Christ Church for more than 80 years.After graduating from Midvale High School, Jim joined the United States Air Force where he honorably served his country from 1942 to 1945. Beginning in 1936, Jim worked for the Ford Tractor Garage. From there, he became an employee of the government working at the New Philadelphia Post Office as a clerk from 1965 through 1983.Jim was united in marriage on November 2, 1947 to the former Betty Stein. Together, they reared their daughter, Barbara Flinn. Betty preceded Jim in death in 1979. He later married the former Margaret Jane Stein who also preceded Jim in passing.Throughout Jim’s lifetime, he was involved in a number of area organizations including the Ohio State Trappers, the National Rifle Association, the American Legion New Philadelphia Post #139, and the Union Grange.In addition to the number of organizations he was involved with, Jim also raised mink for more than 30 years. His mink hides were sold to companies in New York City. At his peak of mink farming, he had more than 600.Jim was most proud of his ministry at the church where he baptized his daughter, grandson, and granddaughter. He also took great pleasure in watching his grandchildren grow from toddlers to adults and supported all of their interests.He will be deeply missed by his daughter, Barbara Flinn of New Philadelphia; his grandchildren, Jessica Flinn of Olmsted Falls, O. and Jared Flinn of Columbus, Indiana; and his brother, Glenn Carlisle of New Philadelphia.In addition to his parents and wives, Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Lois Carlisle Vandever, his brothers-in-law, Harold Stein and Emerson Vandever; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elmer and Ada Stein; his nieces, Rosalie Stein and Brenda Vandever; and his nephews, Mark Vandever and Ron Stein.A service celebrating Jim’s life will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Saturday, September 24, 2011 beginning at 2 p.m. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.Burial will follow the service in East Avenue Cemetery where the New Philadelphia VFW Post #1445 will render military honors. Friends are invited to the Geib Family Center, located adjacent to the funeral home, following the committal service where a meal will be shared. Jim’s family requests memorial contributions be directed to either the Community of Christ Church, 515 Church Ave SW, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663 or Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County, Inc., 201 W 3rd St., Dover, O. 44622.
