Jacob Benjamin Shook

Jacob Benjamin “Jake” Shook, age 21, of New Philadelphia, and formerly of Sugarcreek, died late Saturday, June 17, 2006 in Akron General Medical Center, the result of injuries from an automobile accident the previous weekend. A son of Benjamin and Jody Crites Shook of New Philadelphia and his mother Lorri Harstine Knotts of Sugarcreek, Jake was born at Dover on April 25, 1985.A 2003 graduate of Garaway High School, Jake enjoyed playing basketball through elementary and middle school before embarking on his first job Â? at the Pizza Parlor where he worked alongside his friend and mentor, the late Glenn Lorenz. Following graduation from high school, Jake attended Kent State University Tuscarawas Campus, and began working with Pace-Sankar Landscaping. “Jake interviewed with us in the fall of 2004” said Rick Charnock, general manager of Pace-Sankar, “and I hired him on the spot Â? Jake just had a way of putting everyone he touched at ease. That’s what we’ll miss about him.”Jake was a talented bass guitar player, and was part of a local Christian rock band known as Red Eye Flight Â? along with Coby and Joe Hartzler, and Ryan Miller. The four played occasionally as part of worship in First Baptist Church at New Philadelphia. When not at work, Jake enjoyed playing the online game Halo, and spending time with his family and friends all of whom regarded Jake as clever and witty . “He had a unique way of making you mad at him and making you laugh at the same time” recalled his older sister, Camille. In addition to his parents, Jake is survived by his maternal-grandparents, Bob and Doris “Nana” Hawk Harstine of Baltic, paternal grandparents, Sam and Zelma Blackwell Shook of New Philadelphia, step-grandparents, Leanne “Honeybee” Crites of New Philadelphia, and Jim and his wife Florence Crites of Clearwater, Florida. In addition to his sister, Camille, and her fiancé Ken Kinkade of Fairlawn, Jake will be missed by his sisters Lydia Knotts of Sugarcreek, and Cheyanne Shook of New Philadelphia. Jake leaves behind an extended family that includes an aunt Chris (Nick) Graor of Brecksville, Ohio, uncle Steve Harstine of West Lafayette, Ohio, Aunt, Linda (Terry) Saylor of Canton, Ohio, uncle Rob (Jane) Harstine of Dover, uncle Randy (Diane) Shook of New Philadelphia, aunt Pam (Paul) Wallace of Baltic, aunt, Jennie (Gill) Msangi of Africa, uncle Sam (Jackie) Shook of New Philadelphia, aunt Linda (John) Metzger of Greenville, Texas, aunt Jeanne (Bob) Beaber of Stonecreek, aunt Melissa Lebold and her fiancé Tom Culver of New Philadelphia and aunt Tina (Ron) Schlemmer of New Philadelphia, as well as cousins Kirk, Christian, Nick, Justin, Zack, Derek, Nathan, Kyle, Matthew, Scott, Jackie, Matt, Curt, Lacy, Abbie, Alyssa, Apollo, Mary, Samuel L. Shook IV, Hannah, J.D., Rachel, Scott, Jay, Jessica, Chelsea, Heath, Lance, Mason and Maggie. Friends are invited to call Thursday, June 22, 2006 from 2-4 and from 6-8 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. The Rev. Dr. Steven R. Bailey will lead funeral services Friday Morning at 10:30 in the First United Methodist Church, 201 West High Avenue at New Philadelphia. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery at Sugarcreek. Following the committal service, a reception will be given for family and friends in the church fellowship hall.
