Jack W. Day, age 88 of Dover, passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2014 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on October 4, 1926 at Midvale, Ohio a son of the late George and Iva (Swinderman) Day.
He attended the former Midvale Schools and entered into the United States Army on February 22, 1945 where he proudly served until his honorable discharge. On June 12, 1948, he married his wife of 66 years, Betty (Kail) Day.
Jack was employed by the former Reeves Steel for 23 years until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia, the New Philadelphia American Legion and the Tuscarawas County Senior Center.
In his spare time, Jack along with his wife Betty enjoyed traveling throughout the southern states in their motorhome. Some of their favorite vacation destinations were Winterhaven, FL to watch the Cleveland Indians during Spring Training, Myrtle Beach, SC and traveling to Canada to go fishing. Jack cherished spending time with his grandchildren. He was especially close with his grandson and caregiver Dustin. He enjoyed spending time at his son Dennis’ home where they would gather for family outings around the pond.
In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by two sons, Jim (Susie) Day and Dennis (Radonna) Day all of New Philadelphia; a sister, Nancy Cole of Smyrna, Tennessee; granddaughters, Jennifer (Jay) Culler, Jackie Day, and Denise (Jeremiah) Proudfoot; grandsons, Daniel (Kelly) Day and Dustin Day; and great-grandchildren, Jackson and Sydney Proudfoot, Leo and Ben Culler and Clayton Day.
In addition to his parents, Jack is preceded in death by his twin infant children, Terry and Sherry Day; a granddaughter Jessica Day; sisters, Katherine Lewis, Frieda Friend and Ruby Day; and brothers, Daniel Day and William “Billy” Angus.
The family will greet guests on Sunday, December 7, from 2:00-4:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor Tim McCollum will lead a service celebrating Jack’s life on Monday, December 8, at 11:00 AM in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial, with military honors will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. Following services, all are invited to join the family for a time of food and fellowship in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the New Philadelphia funeral home.
