Anson Jack Rieger, 88, of Atwood Lake, died Monday, December 14, 2015 in Union Hospital at Dover following a recent illness.
A son of the late Joseph and Mary (Haswell) Rieger, Jack was born January 29, 1927 at Strasburg, Ohio.
Jack graduated from Strasburg High School in 1945. The following day, he was drafted into the United States Army and he served in the Military Police Platoon, 1st Division until receiving his honorable discharge on November 23, 1946. During his time in the service, Jack attended a day of the Nuremburg Trials during World War II.
On September 3, 1947, Jack married the love of his life, the former Patricia Eileen Bland, and together the couple raised four sons, Tim, Terry, Douglas and Dennis.
Jack was a longtime employee at Marlite and he retired as a Supervisor after 36 years of service. During his younger years, he enjoyed bowling with the Samsa Fab bowling team as well as coaching his sons’ little league baseball teams. Most of all, Jack cherished the gatherings and the time spent boating with his family at the home he built on Atwood Lake.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Patricia Rieger, his sons, Tim Rieger, Terry (Jackie) Rieger and Douglas (Carol) Rieger all of New Philadelphia and Dennis (Suzie) Rieger of Mineral City; his grandchildren, Ashley Rieger of Portland, Oregon, Andrew Rieger of San Francisco, California, Tera (Brian) Myers and Ryan (Jamie) Rieger both of New Philadelphia and Zachary Rieger of Collinsville, Oklahoma; his great grandchildren, Sophia Myers and Preston, Parker and Peyton Rieger and a brother, Charles Rieger of Alliance.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Sherry Rieger; two sisters, Jane Johns and Marcella Kreis and two brothers, Bud and James Rieger.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Jack’s life will be held on Thursday, December 17, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Brian Flood officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. A luncheon will be held in the Geib Family Center at New Philadelphia following the committal service.
