Jack D. Harvey Sr., 83, of Beach City, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle, died Thursday, April 14, 2011 in Union Hospital at Dover.Jack was born on February 27, 1928 at Rhodell, West Virginia to the late Boyd and Ellen Woods Harvey. He came from a very large family of nine brothers and seven sisters along with numerous step brothers and step sisters. He was raised by his grandparents and lived in various places including, Roanoke and Flat Top, WV, Massillon, Dundee, Navarre and Beach City, OH. He also spent several winters in Inverness, Florida.He served his country in the Korean War and prior to that Jack worked in various coal mines throughout West Virginia. He eventually retired from Republic Steel at Massillon after many years of service.Best known by his friends as an avid golfer, Jack accumulated many trophies and prizes over the years. He won the Tiger Town Open just 6 weeks after having quadruple bypass surgery. His other golf achievements include the following: TDGA winner in 1963, 1966 and 1974, the Jaycee Tournament in 1971 and 1972, Ferris Chevrolet 72 hole tournament in 1981 and the International Golf Tournament in Cincinnati and Columbus two years in a row. He also received many hole in one trophies over the years.On August 29, 1953, Jack married his loving wife, the former Laura Pickar. They shared a life of loving memories including the births of their eight children, Dolores and Darrell Harvey of the home, Christine (David) Ayers of Strasburg, Jack (companion, Gretchen Seran) Harvey Jr., Edward (Patricia) Harvey of Beach City, Clarice (Jack) Neiswonger of Florida, Evelon (Doug) Littleton of Dover and Jeffrey (Stacy) Harvey of Strasburg.In addition to his devoted wife of 57 years and his children and their spouses, Jack leaves behind nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren; seven sisters; five brothers, and numerous step sisters, step brothers, nieces, nephews, cousins, brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws.Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his grandmother, Christine Harvey; his grandfather and step grandmother, Mose and Mahala Harvey; his brothers, Loniel (Lizzie), Frank, Larry and Elgie and his brothers-in-law, Bob Selogy, Otis Linkous, Jack Pappas, Jay Wilhelm and Dillard Jennings.The family will receive friends on Monday, April 18, 2011 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover. A funeral service celebrating Jack�s life will be led by Nathan Douglas on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in the Geib Funeral Center. Burial will follow in Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg. Following the committal service, a memorial reception will be held in the Hospitality Room at the Geib Funeral Center.Those wishing to do so may send the family a personal condolence and view an online memorial by visiting the funeral home website.
