J. Harry Goddard, age 80, of New Philadelphia, died Dec 9, 2004, in New Dawn Health Care Center at Dover, Ohio, after suffering a stroke.He was born March 9, 1924, at Tippecanoe O., a son of the late William Andy Goddard and Faye Ethel Ansel Goddard Bollon. A life-long resident of the area, he graduated from Midvale High School in 1943. Harry served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945, and earned five combat stars. He was in the Battle of the Bulge, landing on Omaha Beach onD-Day plus three. He was a life member of the Dover Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3463 and was also a member of the New Philadelphia VFW Post No. 1445. He worked in heavy construction, was a certified welder, millwright, and carpenter, and a member of Local #69 of the Carpenters’ Union. Harry was also a member of Broadway United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed his yard and garden, especially his roses. Harry was also an enthusiastic wine maker.He is survived by his wife, Elaine Beaber Goddard, whom he married June 27, 1998; two sons, Randy (Pat) Goddard of New Philadelphia and Tracy (Sharon) Goddard of Midvale; grandchildren, Lori (Steve) Laizure of Dover and Tracy (Bob) Russell of Roswell; and great grandchildren, Cory Wolfe, and Logan, Lindsay, and Kelsey Laizure. Also surviving are three stepchildren, Rod (Lynette) Beaber of North Canton, Rita (Mike) Storrie of Greenville, South Carolina, and Ben (Cathy) Beaber of Columbus; step-grandchildren, Kalina Beaber and Matthew Beaber of North Canton, Ryan Storrie and Lauren Storrie of Greenville, S.C., Scott Beaber and Erin Beaber of Columbus, and Darla Case of Wainwright.He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Howard and Paul; one sister, Marie; and one grandson, Jason Goddard. Calling hours will be Sunday, December 12, 2004, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Bill Sowers officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Burial Park in New Philadelphia, where the New Philadelphia Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold military graveside services.Memorial contributions may be made to Broadway United Methodist Church, 120 Church Street SW, New Philadelphia, Ohio, 44663.
