Howard T. Kopp, 88 of Dover passed away August 9, 2016 surrounded by family at Hennis Care Center in Dover after a lengthy battle with Alzheimers.
Born November 24, 1927 in New Philadelphia Ohio, he was the son of the late John and Wilhelmina (Warner) Kopp.
After graduating from New Philadelphia in 1945, Howard joined the U.S. Navy where he served until discharged in 1946. He met the late Edna Lucille (Lucy) Hess while roller skating at the Columbia Roller Rink and they married on July 2, 1949. After more than 50 wonderful years of marriage, she passed away in 2001. They raised 5 children.
Howard’s professional career began at Reeves Steel and Midvale Mine. Then he worked for the US Postal Service in New Philadelphia, ultimately retiring after more than 30 years of service.
As a youth and young man, Howard loved playing baseball. Later he enjoyed watching all sports and was an avid Cleveland Indians and Browns fan. He was a member of the Eagles for whom he bowled in a traveling league versus other Eagles’ teams and was a regular local league bowler for many years.
He and Lucy loved to travel and proudly claimed 49 states, missing only Alaska. They enjoyed spending time with their children and watching their activities. Later their priority shifted to the grandchildren and their activities.
Howard is survived by a brother, Wayne (Alice) of Pineville, Louisiana; children, Dennis (Kathy) of New Philadelphia, David of Uhrichsville, Debbie (Leo) Krantz of Sherrodsville and Doug (Angela) of New Philadelphia; grandchildren, David (Molly), Scott, Jay Wolick, Justin, Sarah (Ben) Clark, Josh (Stephany) Krantz, Heather (Luke) Dodge, Dakota, Dillon, Claudia and Jordi; along with 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his brother, Warner; his sister, Hazel; his son, Donald; and his grandson, Drake.
A memorial service will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Saturday, October 1, 2016 beginning at 11 a.m.
