Howard L Shaffer

Howard L. Shaffer, age 85, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully Monday morning, August 31, 2009 in Country Club Center at Dover. Born at New Philadelphia, February 15, 1924, he was a son of the late Luftus and Lillian D. Rinehart Shaffer. Howard was the owner and operator of H.L. Shaffer Tree Service and Shaffer Wood Products. Together with his son Greg, Howard spent the summer months trimming trees, and the balance of the year, harvesting timber. Many area families relied upon the Shaffer family for annual firewood deliveries. A veteran of World War II, Howard served in the European Theater, earning three bronze stars and the Victory Medal for his service with the 217th Infantry, 44th Division of the United States Army. His memberships include Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Tuscarawas County Senior Center. He’ll be remembered by his family for his strong work ethic, and for his talent for square-dancing. His dance partner for fifty-six years, was his loving wife, the former Dorothy Jean Endres who passed away in July, 2003. The couple wed June 21, 1947. Survivors include three sons; Greg (wife, Linda) Shaffer of New Philadelphia, Steve Shaffer of Columbus, and Doug (wife, Pim) Shaffer of Glendale, Arizona, and a daughter; Joyce Ann Shaffer of New Philadelphia. A grandson, Greg Shaffer of Phoenix, Arizona, as well as a special niece, Barbara (husband, Richard) Wilson of Bolivar, completes the family. Howard’s dear friend, Evelyn Mushrush, of New Philadelphia, also survives. In addition to his parents and wife, Howard is preceded in death by an infant son; Michael Shaffer, and by a sister; Jane Carlisle. Father Ed Keck lead a graveside committal service Thursday, September 3rd at Noon in Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia, where military services will be rendered by VFW Post 1445.
