Homer Dummermuth, Jr.

Homer Russell Dummermuth, Jr. age 90 of New Philadelphia died Monday, October 22, 2018 in Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital at Dover following a brief illness.

Born at Dover, Ohio on April 15, 1928, Homer was the son of the late Homer and Florence Shull Dummermuth, Sr.

He attended New Philadelphia High School and entered into the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany and served as a welder with the U.S. Engineers.

A welder by trade, Homer enjoyed teaching others in his home and for a period of time taught classes at New Philadelphia High School’s night program. He was a 27-year employee of Armco Reeves Steel at Dover. He also enjoyed working in his garage on various projects and tearing apart mowers and tractors only to rebuild or repair them.

He was an avid lover of horses, having kept them for many years. He was also a fan of Western-themed movies and television programs. Homer had a knack for making a story into a believable tall tale and loved joking with those around him. He was a faithful member of Jerusalem Church, having previously been on the church consistory and served as an usher. He loved visiting with family and friends and being challenged by his dog, Bosco, who often fought him for the couch.

Homer is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Elsie Geib whom he married on February 21, 1954; their children, Debbie (Bill) Immel of New Philadelphia and James (Cynthia) Dummermuth of Columbus; five grandchildren, Jeremy Immel, Brooke (Jeremy) Murphy, Christian Dummermuth, Rajani Dummermuth, and Hunter Dummermuth; four great-grandchildren, Bella and Brady Immel and Peyton and Paige Murphy; as well as his brother Dale (Janet) Dummermuth of New Philadelphia.

In addition to his parents, Homer was preceded in death by a son, David Dummermuth.

The family will receive guests on Thursday, October 25, 2018 from 5-8 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A service celebrating Homer’s life will be led by Pastor Tom Hendershot in Jerusalem Church on Friday, October 26, 2018 at 11 AM. A meal and fellowship will follow in the church social hall. Cremation will follow services and a private inurnment will take place at a later date.
