HILBERT L. “DUTCH” HOFFMAN, 79, died Sunday afternoon, April 20, 2003 at Park Village in Dover. A resident of New Philadelphia, Mr. Hoffman was born April 25, 1923 to the late Leo and Anna M. Hauser Hoffman in Schnellville, IN, the oldest of 11 children. During World War II, Dutch served honorably with the U. S. Army. On December 5, 1944 he married Evelyn B. Switzer, who survives. He was an active member of Sacred Heart Church where he served as lector and taught C. C. D. classes. Dutch was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. By profession, he worked for the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District and retired after 15 years service as chief civil engineer. After retirement, Dutch and Evelyn owned a lapidary jewelry business. For several years they lived in Arizona and returned to New Philadelphia in 2002. Dutch enjoyed camping, spending time with family and friends and playing cards. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Susan A. Strauss of New Philadelphia and Nancy L. (Donald) Guinn of Vancouver, WA; two grandsons, A. J. Strauss and Lee (Margie) Strauss; and one great-granddaughter, Eviana Strauss; seven sisters and one brother. Besides his parents, two sisters are also deceased. There will be no calling hours. The recitation of the rosary will be at 10:00 AM with a memorial mass to follow at 10:30 AM on Thursday, April 24, 2003 in Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Fr. William Arnold as celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. After the committal, a reception will be given in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home. Instead of flowers, the family has asked that contributions to Sacred Heart Church, 139 Third St., NE, New Philadelphia, OH 44663 or to the organization of the donor’s choice be made.
